The truth is baby boomers economic depression does not start in your wallet. It starts in your head. And involves your heart as well as the words of your mouth and the actions of your body. Your response to a change in your economic circumstances will bring you a lifestyle of defeat or victory.

Look at the plight of baby boomers who have given their life to a workplace only to have their job sent offshore. 25 years of service counts for nothing. What do you do?

First up you do not panic. That creates a spiral of baby boomers economic depression that can prove fatal. You need to recognize the power of your thoughts over your future.

You can't stop bad news in the form of a job layoff or a failed business. You can however choose your response. Your Assets are the skills, abilities and talents you've developed over the years and you've got plenty of them.

Use your best storytelling mode to tell others, at Church, in locations where you do voluntary work, of your abilities. Always have a pleasant attitude and highlight your ongoing search for jobs to benefit others with your skills.

You get the picture. Spread the news that you are available for hire and open to any business opportunity that may come your way. Seek and you'll. Remember also sometimes you may need perseverance as you apply the Bible truth knock and it shall be opened unto you. That's how doors of economic opportunity get opened.

May you join the ranks of those who are fighting back against baby boomers economic depression and winning the battle.

A Look At Depression

A Look At Depression
By Kathy Brewis

People with depression often times have family members or friends who know their loved one is ill but simply dont know how to help that person. They basically feel helpless. In this short article I will be explaining to you how depression feels. For a person who has experienced depression and lived through it I feel I can provide an accurate description of the illness.

For those who have never experienced clinical depression, it is very hard for them to understand how it is for people who have. Clinical depression is not your typical feeling blue or under the weather feeling. It is so much more than that. People tend to use the terms depressed or feeling depressed very loosely when in conversation. But clinical depression needs to have more respect and understanding than what is conveyed in those conversations. Clinical depression is an illness, which affects both the mind and the body, meaning that you have both the mental effects and also physical symptoms of the illness. This was taken from the National Institute of Mental Healths website

Symptoms
Persistent sad, anxious, or empty mood
Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
Decreased energy, fatigue, being slowed down
Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain
Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
Restlessness, irritability
Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain

According to doctors, you must experience a lost of interest in daily activities or a depressed mood for two weeks before depression can be diagnosed.

Depression deadens everything about your world. Everything seems to be lifeless or dead. You feel like there is no hope at all that things will ever get better. You see no light in sight. Basically you are surrounded in darkness in a light filled world. The light of other people bothers you. You can really irritated at people who seem so happy and you feel so unhappy. For you, there is nothing to laugh or smile about. The whole future seems hopeless and void of meaning. Everything becomes a matter of survival. Trying to get through each day with the least amount of pain and effort. You avoid people, but you also feel these people have something against you regardless of whether that person has done anything wrong. You tend to pretend everything is okay. You go to work and put on a smile and just try not to let on to other people that there is something wrong.

Self esteem is another big issue for me in my depression. I have never had real good self esteem. When I am depressed, my self esteem is shot to hell. I feel like I am not good enough. I feel like the biggest failure in the world. You just feel totally worthless. Nothing you do feels right. You feel people are looking at you and judging every move you make.

People with depression have this dark void inside themselves. Nothing that they do can fill this void. People use a lot of different things to try to fill the void. Some people use alcohol. Others use drugs. And there are those that use sex and food as something to feel the void. When people are trying to fill this void, they are also trying to find something that will help make them feel better.

These are just a few of my thoughts on depression and also some facts about depression. I still am dealing with this to this day and I have come to the conclusion that I will be dealing with it for the rest of my life. But, it does get better.

Treating Depression with Reiki

Treating Depression with Reiki
By Peter Tremayne

Reiki Masters believe that thought is energy vibrating at a very high frequency while the human body is energy vibrating at a lower frequency. Vibrations produce actions and actions produce reactions at grosser and grosser levels of frequency in a ripple effect!

While positive thoughts are universally acknowledged to manifest as health, negative thoughts are held to produce disease or lack of ease. Mental disease is manifested as depression, depressive psychosis, mania or even schizophrenia.

Treating depression with Reiki is fast becoming a sought-after alternative to modern drugs. Reiki deals with depression as negative energy. Negative energy manifests at the aura level as imbalance in the Chakras or energy centres and is visible to the Reiki practitioner as grey or black spots in the aura. Imbalance of the energy centres causes reactions at a physical level, for the energy centre governs the health or disease of the organs and endocrine glands located within its purview.

The Chakra System and Depression

The Chakras that are usually blocked in a person who is depressed are the lower--the root chakra, the naval chakra, and to some extent the solar plexus chakra, which is part of the middle group.

The Root Chakra anchors the person to the earth. It represents the physical will and is associated with the spinal column, bones, teeth, nails, anus, rectum, colon, prostrate gland, blood and the building of cells. The Suprarenal glands, which produce adrenalin and influence body temperature, are governed by condition of the root chakra. The person whose root chakra is out of balance cannot accept life or enjoy physical existence. The creative energy of such a person is low and self-expression is not considered necessary. The person will have a tendency to overindulge in sensual pleasures such as overeating, alcohol, sex etc. He or she becomes selfish, self-centred. Physically the person becomes overweight and suffers from constipation. When challenged the person becomes irritable, aggressive, upset, violent and displays a complete lack of trust. If the Chakra is completely blocked the person will lack physical and emotional stamina and will be filled with feelings of uncertainty.

The Naval Chakra is the creative and reproductive centre of the being. It is associated with the pelvic girdle, kidneys, bladder and all liquids such as blood, lymph, gastric juices and the regulation of the female menstrual cycle. The glands associated with this chakra are the Prostrate, gonads, ovaries and testicles. If this energy centre is active and free of blocks the person exhibits freedom in self-expression and life appears interesting. Interpersonal relationships are regarded as beautiful. A disharmonious chakra induces the person turn off sensual messages and display low self-esteem, emotional paralysis and sexual coldness. Life does not seem worth living and suicidal tendencies manifest themselves.

The Solar Plexus Chakra is the power centre of the being. A harmonious Chakra gives the person a feeling that he has the power of shaping things. It is associated with the lower back, abdomen, digestive system, stomach, liver, spleen, gallbladder and the automatic nervous system. The organ that is governed by this Chakra is the Pancreas. The body absorbs solar energy through this chakra. This nurtures the ethereal body and energizes and maintains the physical body. Emotional energy is also governed by this Chakra. Personality traits and social identities are determined by it. Since it is located between the lower and higher chakras it has the additional function of purifies the basic instincts and directing the creative energy to higher values of life. It is also connected to the astral body and helps us integrate our feelings, wishes and experiences harmoniously. A block solar plexus chakra deprives the individual of the zest for life. The person feels gloomy, unbalanced and moody. Negative vibrations impact the individual through this chakra. The person is restless and attempts to manipulate everything in accordance with his or her own wishes. There is a persistent feeling of inadequacy, which drives them to ceaseless activity. The person gets easily threatened and tends to feel dejected and discouraged. The person insists that obstacles are preventing them from realizing the true goals of life.

It is clear that the symptoms of a person in the grip of acute depression are as much physical as emotional and psychological. A block will exist in the root chakra, the naval chakra and the Solar plexus Chakra. The creative energies of the person will be at an all time low and the person will avoid situations where he or she has give expression to his or her feelings. He is self indulgent, selfish, self-centred and suffers from a large number of ailments related to the stomach and has a tendency to put on weight. He or she will lack physical stamina and will be moody, irritable, aggressive and defensive. He will have no interest in life and will refuse to socialize. In extreme cases he will attempt suicide.

Case Study of Treating Depression with Reiki:

Ms.L, an obese woman (she weighed 180 Kgs), had not stepped out of her front door for the last ten years. She was convinced that she could not walk without support and that she would fall down if she tried. She spent entire days in the house, refusing to talk with visitors. She had a compulsive need to eat and would cook and consume huge quantities of Chicken, eggs and meats at odd times of the day. She had tried anti depressant drugs and other methods of treatment that included Homeopathy, acupressure, acupuncture and anything that was recommended to her by her sister and brother in law. She was convinced that she was born unlucky and she would never be normal again. She would begin a treatment with lukewarm enthusiasm, but would soon slip into lethargy and refuse to go on with the treatment. When Ms.L was referred for Reiki, she had convinced herself that she had not long to live and had told her sister not to be surprised if she found her dead one-day. Her sister-- alarmed--rushed to the Reiki clinic for help.

Day 1: Since the patient would not come to the clinic, I decided to visit her home. It was clear from Ms.L's posture that she was in the grip of acute depression. She was seated on a sofa with her feet up on a footstool. Her body limp, her head bowed and her shoulders drooping. Her arms lay lifelessly at her sides. She seemed lost to the world and did not even look up when we entered the room. She merely lifted her eyes to look at us without enthusiasm when she was talked to. An aura scan revealed that her root chakra and the naval chakra were completely blocked and her solar plexus chakra was partially blocked.

With a lot of persuasion from her sister and myself, she got up and went to lie down on her bed. I noted that she used the walker even though she was perfectly able to walk without it. She seemed to cling to it as a means of support. I kept up a general chatter as I started the treatment. She continued looking at the ceiling blankly. After some time, she started to pay a little more attention. Her muscles would twitch and she lifted her head to see what we are doing. She called her sister near and asked her whether we were using some chemicals as she was feeling some heat where my hand rested. When she was assured that no chemicals were being used, she subsided once more into indifference. Slowly and visibly she began to relax. She soon fell into a deep sleep and began to snore. As the round of treatment was over, we let her sleep.

Day 2: Ms.L was waiting for me. She looked relaxed and calm. On enquiry, she replied, I slept deeply and dreamlessly for the first time. I feel well. She then went willingly and lay down on her bed. After chatting with her for some time on a variety of topics (she did not reply), I started the treatment. While doing Reiki, I continued to chat and Ms.L replied in monosyllables to the questions being addressed to her. At the end of the hour she remarked, That felt nice.

Day 3: Mrs. L was ready for me. She was lying down and eager to start the treatment. She began to talk about the weather all the time keeping an eye on me. When I agreed that it was hot, she began telling me how the heat was affecting her and how she could not eat as much as she used to. I made sympathetic noises to encourage her. She seemed to feel reassured and gradually opened up--almost as if she were talking to herself and occasionally asking me a question. Then, her tone changed and she became more emotional and personal. She poured out her feelings. She insisted that she was very depressed because God had taken away her husband and her children had all flown away to distant lands and nobody cared for her. She said she had hated God from the day he had taken her husband and she had not gone to church or prayed for a long time. Since she had been very religious, she felt guilty that she had forsaken God but, she hated him and she did not want to pray to him. She then began weeping and ranting at God and exclaiming that she should not be doing it! This emotional outburst lasted for almost an hour, during which I continued the treatment, unfazed. Finally, exhausted by emotions and relaxed by the Reiki, Ms.L fell asleep.

Day 4: Ms.L was waiting for me--a little shamefaced and diffident. She greeted her with a defiant I was carried away a little yesterday. I am sorry. I assured her that it was ok and that she must not hold back her emotions and that I do not mind her talking to me about anything. She then, asked me a little suspiciously 'Do you think your treatment is making me unbalanced?. Well that was a tricky question at this stage and I was not very sure whether I should admit to the fact or assure her that it was not so. I intuitively felt that it would be better to explain to Ms.L and so I told her that Reiki dives deep into the psyche and stirs up emotional blocks for release. I explained that what she was experiencing was the release of emotional blocks and it was nothing to be alarmed about. It would help her come out of her lethargy and feel more enthusiastic about life. She was silent for some time and then said that she was glad that I had been honest with her. She only requested that whatever she said to me should be kept confidential. I agreed and she said she was looking forward to the treatment. As we went through the various hand positions, she started asking me about Reiki and what it was all about. I explained to her about energy centres and how imbalances in energy caused illness. She expressed eagerness to learn it herself. I told that it could be easily arranged. She then began to talk to me about her husband and the wonderful man that he had been and how cancer had eaten into his insides unsuspected. She described the shock they had experienced when the disease was diagnosed at a terminal stage. She described the trauma of waiting for death to part them. She re-lived the pain she had felt when he went to the hospital for the last time and she could not be with him during his last minutes, as she was laid up in bed at home with a fracture. She felt she had let him down and was guilty of continuing to live when he had died such an agonizing death. She then sobbed quietly till she fell asleep exhausted by her emotions.

Day 5: Ms.L was looking very anxious when I entered her room. She immediately piped up Do you think God is cruel? I cautiously replied No. She then asked, Do you think I should begin to pray to him? Do you think he will hear my prayers now? I have abused him so much! I was impressed. I said, Yes, you should. God is very forgiving and he is always happy to welcome his children, however abusive they have been! She was content with my reply and got ready for the treatment. While I worked the hand positions she continued telling me how much she loved God and how she had missed her conversations with him. She then told me she is convinced that her husband was waiting for her in heaven and she would join him when God felt that it was time. Meanwhile she had a lot to do. She had written to her son and asked him to come back home to keep her company and was in hourly expectation of hearing from him. She then began thanking me for the wonderful treatment that I was giving her and she was convinced that God had sent me to her when she was most depressed.

Days 6-21: Followed with the patient very enthusiastic and cooperative. She gradually left off her walker and her posture improved and she stuck to mealtimes with determination. She even consented to step out of her house and take short walks in the corridor with her sister. A month later she completed a course in Reiki and even visited a textile showroom to select some dress material for her. She invited me over for a party she held to celebrate her Son's return home. (The boy had left his job to take up one closer home to be with his mother). She was bubbling with energy and extremely enthusiastic about life.A quick scan of her chakras revealed that the energy levels were normal and the grey spots in her aura at the root and naval chakra had disappeared. The Solar plexus Chakra was also open.

Combining Reiki With Other Therapies.

Many Reiki practitioners combine crystal therapy with Reiki to stimulate the chakras. Limonite, Lapis Lazuli, Pietersite, and Turquoise are used to stimulate the sacral Chakra Wardite, Mesolite, Jasper, and Jet, help the base chakra open up. The Solar Plexus Chakra is stimulated by chrysanthemum stone, gypsum, jasper, obsidian and rutilated quartz.. Wadeite is used to stimulate all the chakras. I personally, combine Reiki treatment with Bach Flower treatment and crystal therapy as I find that it accelerates the healing and gives the patient a psychological satisfaction.

As is evident from the above case study, that Reiki brings about immediate and dramatic improvement in condition of persons suffering from depression. It is also evident from countless testimonials that persons who have come out of their depression by using Reiki have not had a recurrence of the same. Many hospitals round the world are recommending Reiki as a parallel system of treatment. Treating depression with Reiki is becoming a recognized practice within hospitals and more so with local doctors. The efficacy and impact of Reiki is best understood when it is personally experienced.

A Guide To Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Depression

A Guide To Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Depression
By Dan Ho

Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Depression

Research concerning omega 3 fatty acids and depression consists of clinical trials with patients suffering from bi-polar disorder, post-partum depression and mild to moderate depression. The omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA are generally used together in these studies, but sometimes only one or the other is used.

Research began because of a marked lack of depression and other neurological conditions in peoples whose diets were rich in foods containing omega 3 fatty acids. In studies of the link between omega 3 fatty acids and depression researchers use fish oil specifically because it is the best and most common source of DHA and EPA. Botanical sources contain the omega 3 fatty acid ALA which must be converted by the body into DHA and EPA and this conversion process can be inefficient for many people.

Adding foods containing omega 3 fatty acids may also be inefficient, since fish is the only identified natural source of both DHA and EPA. Some people do not like fish and even eating fish three to five times per week may not supply adequate amounts of these omega 3 fatty acids. The most success has been achieved in studies of omega 3 fatty acids and depression relief, when fish oil supplements were used.

In one study, the results showed a 48-51% reductions in degree of depression when patients were given fish oil dietary supplements.

The connection between omega 3 fatty acids and depression is fairly well known. People suffering from depression generally have lower levels of DHA in their bloodstreams, probably due to the lack of foods containing omega 3 fatty acids in their diets. The connection between omega 3 fatty acids and depression is also well researched.

A study of omega 3 fatty acids and depression in London concluded that EPA was an effective treatment for bi-polar disorder. Because of the link between depression and chronic fatigue syndrome, the effectiveness of omega 3s in treating this syndrome has been studied and concluded that patients responded favorably.

Another study of omega 3 and depression consisted of studying the studies themselves, and concluded that it is likely that low levels of omega 3 fatty acids in the bloodstream are linked and may, in some cases, be the cause of depression.

These are only a few of the many studies that exist concerning omega 3 fatty acids and depression. In general, all conclusions report improvement in symptoms related to depression after supplementation of omega 3 fatty acids.

While it may be difficult to consume enough foods containing omega 3 fatty acids to reduce the symptoms of depression, taking a daily dietary supplement of fish oil is easy. No one is suggesting that anyone stop taking their anti-depressant medications, however, if you are already using them.

The link between omega 3 fatty acids and depression is still being studied and further research is needed.

Now that you know about omega 3 fatty acids and depression, learn about the fish oil supplements we ourselves take after extensive product comparison and research. Visit: http://www.omega-3-fish-oil-guide.com/Omega3Depression.html

Why Great Depression Causes and Personal Recollections

Why Great Depression - Causes and Personal Recollections
By Lindsey Williams

Those of us long in tooth have difficulty understanding why folks these days worry so much about an economic recession. The Great Depression of 1930-34 that we lived through was a genuine wide-wasting foot-stomping calamity.

The historic designation of great as in large -- is totally inadequate. It was a defining event that totally rearranged our concepts of government, social responsibility and employer-employee relations.

United States population at that time was 123 million, a little less than half that of today. Fortune Magazine estimated that 34 million men, women and children (28 percent) were without any income what so ever. In the absence of unemployment compensation programs, the federal government had no way of determining actual figures.

Average weekly pay for those who had jobs was $16.21. Purchasing power of money was three times that of today, but pay was less than todays government-mandated minimum wage.

Five thousand banks failed during the Great Depression. More than 237,000 families were evicted from their homes. Two million men were bumming around the country at any given time searching for work.

Many cities patrolled the roads to prevent transients from seeking work where long-term residents were jobless. Those that sneaked by were arrested a practice that was ineffective because men broke windows or accosted strangers in order to get a meal and bed in jail.

Every city had a soup kitchen where long lines of hungry people mostly men waited. Women with children went to the head of the lines.

Shantytowns of scrap lumber and tents -- without water or sewers -- sprang up in wasteland near cities. They were called Hoovervilles after President Herbert Hoover who took office in 1929 as the world economy collapsed.

Laid off workers formed labor unions to bargain job security. My first assignment as a high school newspaper reporter was to cover the bitter 1936 sit-down strike at General Motors factories in Flint, Michigan.

Personal Recollections

I was a nine-year-old boy at Flint, when the Depression was heralded by the stock market crash of 1929.

Men abandoned their families to the charity of working relatives, 60 cents a day in city welfare and once-a-month handouts of surplus farm products. Farmers were in equally dire straits because foreign markets had collapsed. A devastating three-year drought compounded their miseries.

It is with great pain that I recall those days. My father abandoned my mother, me and two younger sisters. Once in awhile we got a $5 bill in a letter from him without message or return address.

Fortunately there were three uncles nearby with jobs who helped us out. Mother waited tables for a dollar a day plus tips 50 cents on a good night.

I peddled handbills and caddied at a golf course on weekends. My right shoulder today is an inch lower than my left as a result of toting a golf bag before my growth stopped.

We lost our home, moved to cheap rent places, then attic apartments. Mother gave up her possessions for back rent. She would not go on welfare. That was a disgrace.

Finally when we were really starving she went to the surplus depot and brought home a peck-sack of dried peas. For ten days we had nothing but pea soup for breakfast, dinner and supper. I still hate pea soup.

Finally the landlord ordered us to leave he needed money also -- and kept Mothers cherished piano for back rent. She never played again.

We moved our beds into the basement of an uncles home, and his family set us at their own meager table.

My mother, maternal grandmother and three aunts pooled resources. Our rented house was crowded but home.

Our meals were sparse, yet we all laughed when we read in a discarded newspaper the menu for prisoners at the county jail. They had the same meal that day not much as we were eating.

A morning ritual was everyone assembling to make cardboard inserts for shoes whose soles had worn through. By the end of day the inserts would be worn through also.

The point of this depressing tale is that it was not unusual back then. Todays generation cannot comprehend the demoralizing impact that a deep, economic depression has on a nation -- thank God.

Stock And Tariffs

It is popularly believed that the Great Depression was caused by the spectacular stock market crash of 1929. In fact, root causes of the economic collapse were complex.

Stock markets have little effect on the overall economy. Buyers of common stock, for the most part, buy and sell to each other. After an initial sale of stock, issuing companies receive no benefit from resales by others. At that time, less than one percent of adult Americans held common stocks.

Traders in stocks continuously monitor economic developments to try and ascertain future trends. Buy low, sell high. Collectively they are remarkably good forecasters.

Nevertheless, the financial panic here and abroad at the time is instructive. A cogent analysis is that by Jude Wanniski in The Way the World Works. He formerly was associate editor of the Wall Street Journal and now heads his economic consulting firm, Polyconics.

American workers and farmers geared up to supply the Allies in the First World War. The U.S. government loaned money to France and England. The latter bought armaments and food in great quantity because their farm systems were disrupted.

International purchases in those days were made in gold. By 1929, the U.S. had gathered 80 percent of the world supply. Foreign buyers of American goods had only a small supply of gold available for overseas purchases. This scarce commodity went up in price for foreign customers as it became even scarcer.

After the war, European farmers and workers resumed full production. They began underselling American products. The Congress, with full approval of presidents, imposed tariff taxes on imported wheat and corn to protect American farmers.

Tariff taxes seemed to work so well, Congress imposed them on 200 additional commodities. Industrial and farm profits started to rise. Gold coins were a common currency.

Foreign countries imposed tariffs of their own in retaliation. But Americans didnt seem to notice. The spiral toward a worldwide economic depression had begun.

Stock Market Crash

With U.S. profits rising, irrationally exuberant investors rushed to buy common stocks. There was very little bank regulation. Loans to buy stocks that were soaring were easily available with just 10 percent cash and the other on 90 percent margin. Banks joined the mania by investing their depositors money in high-flying sure-thing stocks.

As stocks doubled in market value, they were re-invested on margin in a race to become millionaires. The phenomenon was occurring in real estate. The Florida Land Boom roared ahead in the same manner. That decade is remembered as the Roaring Twenties.

Amateur market traders didnt notice that professional bear investors were beginning to sell short -- that is, contracting to sell stock for a lower price at some future date.

Only the bears sensed the ultimate, depressing effect of tariffs higher cost of imported raw materials and less profit on sales abroad.

Hoover and a new Congress took office in March 1929. The stock market hit its then-record high of 800 on Aug. 5 (8,000 today, 11,000 not so long ago). However, quarterly reports of key industries began to show profit declines.

Congress, ignorant of impending market correction, threw gasoline on the fire by scheduling debate on a new tariff bill sponsored by Sen. Smoot and Rep. Hawley. The commodity targeted was carbide, a critical ingredient in the manufacture of industrial products.

It was apparent that the new tariff bill would pass. Republicans and Democrats were of the same mind. Hoover ran on support for tariffs to protect American farmers and workers. Democrats made high tariffs a plank in their campaign platform.

Bears raced for the exits. The stock market experienced its heaviest sell-off in its history on Thursday, Oct. 24. The New York Times bannered the story: Worst Stock Market Crash Stemmed By Banks; 12,894.650-share Day; Leaders Confer; Find Conditions Sound.

Brokers called clients to cover the margin loss to protect their investments. Many stockholders scraped up enough cash to cover losses.

The market rallied a bit on Friday. Federal Reserve bank trustees met all weekend and decided they needed to do nothing. The market gained a little more on Monday, but not enough to be reassuring.

When the market opened Tuesday, Oct. 29, all overnight orders were to sell at market. The telegraphic tape of sales quickly fell two hours behind. Telephone calls to brokers were unanswered.

A crowd of stockowners gathered on Wall Street and steps of the old U.S. Treasury building outside the Stock Exchange -- waiting for scraps of information hustled out by infrequent messengers.

The Times headline blared: Stocks Collapse In 16,410,030-day. The date has gone down in history as Black Tuesday.

In four days of trading, the Dow-Jones Industrial stocks had fallen to just 8 percent of their pre-crash values. The countrys Gross National Product value fell from $104 billion, to $41 billion.

Aftermath

One of the myths about the Black Tuesday crash was that many bankrupt investors committed suicide that day. A London newspaper reported erroneously that 11 busted-brokers jumped from their office windows in despair.

The rumor started as the result of the suicide -- witnessed by Winston S. Churchill on a visit to New York City -- two weeks before the crash. A vice-president of the Earl Radio Corp. jumped to his death from the Savoy-Plaza Hotel. His suicide note read: We are broke. Last April, I was worth $100,000. Today, I am $24,000 in the red.

A week after the crash, J.J. Riordan, president of the County Trust Company, took a pistol from a tellers cage at his bank, went to his home in downtown Manhattan, and shot himself. The news was suppressed until after the bank closed at noon Saturday to avoid causing a run on the bank.

There is no record of jumpers during the pair of crashes, and none ever in the New York financial district. Nonetheless, Will Rogers, a popular humorist, quipped, When Wall Street took that tail spin, you had to stand in line to get a window to jump out of.

Ironically, Congress adjourned in November 1929 without action on the suspect Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act and did not return until the spring of 1930. By this time the Great Depression was well underway.

Still unaware of the damaging effect of tariffs, Congress completed action on Smoot-Hawley and passed it in the Senate on June 13 by just two votes.

Inasmuch as it passed after the Depression was well underway, it was not realized that the debate and certain passage spooked the forward-looking stock market.

Passage of the act continued to hamper recovery. A hundred thousand companies closed.

It took years for a new science of economics to realize that tariffs, the uneven distribution of gold and Federal Reserve inaction had done the damage not the stock market.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt took office in 1933. He closed all banks for ten days to stem panic withdrawals, outlawed gold coinage, set farm quotas and established government make-work programs (who can forget the WPA and the CCC?) to pump confidence and money into the U.S. economy.

Yet, it was not until Smoot-Hawley was scrapped -- and America armed for World War II -- that the U.S. economy regained vitality and that unemployment returned to normal.

Another personal note: During WW2, I joined the Navy and my sisters married military men. Our mother got a job at Buick making war products and bought herself a house.

Depression from a Spiritual Perspective

Depression from a Spiritual Perspective
By Friedrich Asen

When you read about depression, you will encounter many passages like the following:

These brain chemicalsin varying amountsare responsible for our emotional state. Depression happens, when these chemical messages arent delivered correctly between brain cells, disrupting communication.

What could be probably wrong with that statement?

It is based on the unquestioned belief that human beings are machines. Although this assumption is widespread, it is simply not a fact. Machines are built, operated and cared for by conscious human beings. In an analogous way our body and mind exist because of our existence as conscious beings.

It is not matter, which builds consciousness, but it is consciousness, which forms matter. That is actually our observation everywhere.

The matter of depression must be totally reevaluated from this new perspective. It is not a fact that brain chemicals are responsible for our emotional state, but vice versa. Our emotional state leads to the production of certain chemicals in our brain and body.

Of course there is an interlink between the two planes. Emotional states can definitely be influenced by certain chemical substances. But there is some substantial loss of information, as the positive state induced by chemicals cannot be compared with a natural positive state derived from the firm foundation in the conviction that life is wonderful.

Here we have arrived at a crucial point.

Depression is not caused by chemicals in the brain, but rather causes chemicals in the brain. Depression is a state of mind, wherein the affected human being has lost his/her connection to the original quality of life, which is bliss, knowledge and eternity.

Neither will medication help to overcome depression, nor superficial psychological treatment. The only way to help the depression sufferer is by unalloyed love, which is rare in this world. This sort of love will not further push him into the state of a helpless and powerless victim, but will empower him to take his fate into his own hands.

In this way the person suffering with depression will be given the chance to see live from a new perspective. He will learn to love himself despite of any shortcomings, because by feeling appreciated and loved he will come to love his real spiritual personality, which is always beyond the polarity of material despair and happiness. When he finds shelter in the ultimate quality of pure consciousness, which is unconditional love, he will feel the natural bliss of life.

Consequently this article ends with a request to doctors and psychologists: Become unconditional lovers! All other cures are temporary, like shifting a hurting heavy weight from one shoulder to the other. If you want to solve the root problem, you have to solve it first and foremost in yourself.

Winter Snow Can Cast A Blanket Of Depression

Winter Snow Can Cast A Blanket Of Depression
By Chris W James

With overcast skies and the snow falling across the Northeast, many find themselves covered in a blanket of depression. Winter months are prime time for Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD as it's commonly referred to. SAD is a mood disorder associated with depression and related to seasonal variations of light. During the winter months, the days become shorter, so we are exposed to less daylight. No big deal, right? Wrong! Here are some tips and valuable information from the National Institute of Mental Health to help defeat those winter blues.

Possible Cause of this Disorder

Melatonin, a sleep-related hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain, has been linked to SAD. This hormone, which may cause symptoms of depression, is produced at increased levels in the dark. Therefore, when the days are shorter and darker the production of this hormone increases.

-symptoms range from excessive weight gain and/or excessive eating and sleeping during the winter months

-symptoms occur only during winter, with no recurring episodes during spring and summer

-cravings for sugary or starchy foods

-seasonal episodes substantually outnumber non seasonal depressive episodes

Treatments

Phototherapy or bright light therapy has been shown to suppress the brains secretion of melatonin. Although, there have been no research findings to definitely link this therapy with an antidepressant effect, many people respond to this treatment. The device most often used today is a bank of white fluorescent lights on a metal reflector and shield with a plastic screen. For mild symptoms, spending time outdoors during the day or arranging homes and workplaces to receive more sunlight may be helpful. One study found that an hours walk in winter sunlight was as effective as two and a half hours under bright artificial light. If phototherapy is not effective, other treatments are available such as medication. Other options are available. Speak with your family doctor for more information.

Women Are Four Times as Likely as Men to Suffer From Depression New FDA Approved Therapy

Women Are Four Times as Likely as Men to Suffer From Depression - New FDA Approved Therapy
By Charles Donovan

Women are four times likely to suffer from depression than men. While men are 50% as likely than women to seek treatment. As a result, women can suffer from depression or from being the caretaker for their husband or partner. And the whole family suffers.

As a male, I am not an expert on womens' issues. I do know that depression is a stealth disease that can be debilitating and sometimes fatal-suicide. Rather than seek treatment men turn to alcohol and drugs. Women then become the caretakers. Depression crosses all genders, ethnic groups and economic classes.

This is my limited understanding of what women go through during PMS; You are very irritable and screaming at your children for days; you just burst into tears again and told your husband hes never understood you anyway. No one at home or work can do anything right.

The dozens of little things you juggle without much thought every day seem so overwhelming youve simply not done them. You even tried to play tennis to relax, but most of your shots were off target. Your back hurts; your breasts are tender; it seems like you spend four or five days a month feeling like this. Could this be premenstrual syndrome (PMS)? Or maybe it is clinical depression?

More than 100 different physical and psychological symptoms have been associated with PMS. Bloating, abdominal pain, decreased coordination, breast tenderness, headache, back, joint, and muscle pains, oversleeping or insomnia, change in appetite, and food cravings are common physical complaints. Irritability, anxiety, wanting to be alone, decreased interest in usual activities, mood swings, depression, loss of interest in sex, extreme lack of energy and difficulty concentrating are frequent psychological components of PMS.

I have learned that severe PMS (now called premenstrual dysphoric disorder or PMDD) has a biological basis. We know hormones have effects on neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain) like serotonin and noradrenalin, and a variety of serotonin abnormalities have been found throughout the menstrual cycle in women with PMS. Antidepressants that affect serotonin, like Prozac and Zoloft (SSRIs), have been effective for more than 70 percent of women with PMDD. Newer strategies that use these medications during only part of the menstrual cycle are now being employed for some women.

When antidepressants are used to treat depression, it may take three or four weeks before they are effective. Many antidepressants don't work for women or simply stop working, i.e. prozac poop out. In PMDD the positive effect is almost immediate. This means some women can take the medication starting a day or two before their symptoms typically begin and stop it once menstruation has begun.

What about hormonal treatments for PMS? Medications like leuprolide that turn off ovulation are effective but have more side effects and carry the potential for long-term risks like osteoporosis. Progesterone and oral contraceptives had been widely used for PMS, but many studies have now shown high dose estrogen and progestin contraceptives are not effective. In fact, some studies have demonstrated these oral contraceptives worsened depressive symptoms in some women.

Developing new coping strategies such as enlisting the support of your family, and trying to limit over scheduling yourself on the days when your symptoms are likely to be at their worst can be extremely helpful. Some popular treatments like vitamin B-6, evening primrose oil and thyroid hormone have generally not been found to be helpful.

However, many strategies and antidepressants don't work in the long term. The FDA has approved the only long term treatment option for depression; vagus nerve stimulation. Vagus nerve stimulation therapy involves a ninety-minute out-patient procedure. IT is NOT related to shock treatments or ECT. Vagus nerve stimulation changed my life completely from one of utter despair to genuine happiness and joy. There is no article long enough to express my gratitude for this remarkable therapy.

You can learn learn more about vagus nerve stimulation by visiting http://www.OutoftheBlackHole.com There is a free newsletter to keep you up-to-date on this FDA approved medical breakthrough.

Charles Donovan was a patient in the FDA investigational trial of vagus nerve stimulation as a treatment for chronic or recurrent treatment-resistant depression. He was implanted with the vagus nerve stimulator in April of 2001. He chronicles his journey from the grips of depression thanks to vagus nerve stimulation therapy in his book:

Out of the Black Hole: The Patient's Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression

His all inclusive book prepares depression sufferers to make an informed decision about this ninety-minute out-patient procedure. It is a must read before you discuss this treatment with your psychiatrist. A prescription for the procedure is required from an M.D. and it is covered by most insurance plans.

He is the founder of the http://www.VagusNerveStimulation.com Web Site and Bulletin.
